Tornado Shelters and your home

Lately, we have been having the worst weather around the country. I spoke to a lady last week from Tuscaloosa, AL. She and everyone on her street lost everything they had. This is so heartbreaking but even worse are the families that have lost a loved one. You can always rebuild, buy new stuff, etc... but you can not replace the loved ones in your life. So I thought today might be a good time to talk about storm shelters.

Do you know that you can get a tax break for building a storm shelter in your home? FEMA offers information on building a safe room in your home or small business. It is easier and less costly to add one as  your building a new house but you can add a safe room to an existing home as well.

Taking Shelter From the Storm: Building a Safe Room For Your Home or Small Business

The publication provides designs for basement, in-ground, and above-ground safe rooms. This download contains the construction plans and cost estimates. As long as you follow FEMA's guidelines these safe rooms could be a lifesaver. I can think of no better reminder of a tornado or hurricanes destruction than what we have been seeing lately.

If you decide to order a DesignHouse plan with "DP" in the plan number we can work with you to modify the plan, as needed, to include a safe room.

Have a great weekend everyone and stay safe.
